School History

Founded in 1848 by a group of freemasons, Rhodes College has always had a strong affiliation to the liberal arts culture. Since establishing, the faculty and staff have dedicated themselves to encouraging students to succeed in their individual goals through educational adventures. Building traditions is a core value of Rhodes College, providing students with a solid academic and social surrounding that influences growth and development. The campus itself is also filled with historical traditions in the buildings that have been able to withstand generations of Rhodes College students such as the Geodesic Dome, built in the 70s and has since been home to successful chemists and scientist alumni. In 1855, Rhodes College developed an affiliation with the Presbyterian Church.

Rhodes College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for the baccalaureate and masters degree programs.

Rhodes College remains true to its Masonic roots, encouraging students to maximize their education by presenting a balanced mixture of challenging programs and coursework with socially enriching events and organizations. The curriculum has enhanced with the changing times and has come a long way since 1875, when the material was theology based. In fact, by 1917, the school had been chartered as three different names including Southwestern Presbyterian University before it became officially known as Rhodes College in 1984.

Campus Life

Rhodes College enables students the peace of mind that they have all the essentials amenities on campus grounds, with a wider selection just a bus ride away. Students can find a full spectrum of facilities such as the bookstore, computer lab and dining hall. Laundry facilities are also located in each residence hall. Students are encouraged to participate in the various clubs and organizations that meet – the majority of which are operated by the students themselves. There are over 70 clubs and organizations available, in addition to the various athletic teams. The Bryan Campus Life Center is available for students to assist with scheduling conflicts, counseling, health services and other student services.

The majority of Rhodes College students live on campus, building a strong community of students that live, study and work together – helping each other to reach their goals. In the various residence halls located on and off campus, students of like majors and interests are able to house in dorms that hold up to three students comfortably. This type of setting encourages students to build social and professional relationships and friendships that can enhance their social and communication skills. All rooms are furnished with dressers, desks, beds and closet space for each student, as well as wireless Internet throughout the residence halls and campus.

At Rhodes College, students can take advantage of the various student support services that can assist them with preparing resumes, interview etiquette and internship placement. Both the faculty and staff members, as well as the student body are actively involved in peer counseling and social development through the Mentorship Programs and Leadership Development groups.

Financial Aid

Rhodes College financial aid counselors are dedicated to helping students focus on their studies rather than stressing paying tuition. All Rhodes College students are considered for various financial aid relief upon admission such as academic and merit-based grants, athletic scholarships and artistic awards. Students are encouraged to take advantage of all forms of government funded loans such as FAFSA and NYS TAP loans. Rhodes College also offers various work-study programs that can help students pay for non-tuition related expenses.

The Financial Aid Office is available throughout the school year, helping students and their families apply for financial aid and explore less traditional funding options as well. Rhodes College is attentive to maintaining a solid support foundation to help students focus on their academic growth rather than financial investment. Counselors are available to explore all funding opportunities to alleviate the financial hardship of out of pocket expenses.
