Hendrix College offers students an innovative and life changing college experience based on inclusive opportunities and academic resources. The opportunities presented to students are unmatched by any other educational facility due to the involvement of faculty and alumni. Consistently ranked as a Best Value College, Hendrix College provides students with a wide range of academic courses and professional training. Although the College is based on a liberal arts education, many students take advantage of the popular science based majors offered such as Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Focused on helping students to develop both personally and academically, Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas strives to provide students with all of the essential amenities, in addition to a challenging education. This ensures that students are not stressed about the various life aspects and can focus on achieving their goals. However, to offset the culture shock after graduation, students are well prepared for independent living by the residential campus life offerings such as leadership programs, seminars and personal enrichment lectures. Hendrix College offers a home away from home for many students and is proud to be a vital part of the student success.
School History
Founded in 1876 as the Central Institute by Reverend Isham L. Burrow, the school was established to provide the community with a reliable way to enrich the futures of local students. During the first ten years of operation, the school was renamed several times, each incorporating new advantages to the curriculum. Holding strong affiliations with the Methodist Episcopal Church, which over the years merged with the United Methodist Church, the school was renamed to the Central Collegiate Institute in 1881. However, after three name changes and relocations, in 1889, under the supervision of Bishop Eugene R. Hendrix, the establishment now known as Hendrix College was born.
Hendrix College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The self-study program offered at the College is also accredited by the Program to Evaluate and Advance Quality, obtaining academic review every ten years.
Hendrix College has withheld a long-standing commitment to student achievement throughout its history. During the 1930’s, the College began to develop its campus and stabilize enrollment, operating as a coeducational liberal arts institute. By the 20th Century, the campus consisted of 15 buildings that are still in use today, many of which have gained national recognition as historical structures. In 2005, in honor of the founding father, the Hendrix Odyssey Program was established, marking the history of scientific advancement at the College.
Campus Life
Campus life at Hendrix College offers wide variety events and attractions, the majority of which are organized by the student body. Students can conveniently stay ahead of all events and schedule by the Public Events Calendar that is maintained by the Office of Student Life, making it easy for students to incorporate extra-curricular activities into their academic schedules. The Media Center located on campus provides an array of entertainment opportunities throughout the year from midnight movies to live performances by the Arts and Theatre Clubs. Students have over 150 organizations to choose from, incorporating every aspect of special interests and religious groups. All students are encouraged to participate in these groups or help develop new groups for the student body to get involved with.
The campus grounds also host many special events geared toward alumni involvement. Many Hendrix College alumni return to campus throughout their professional careers to engage students and guide them toward productive and ethical professional studies. In addition to the academic aspect of college life, it is extra-curricular programs such as these that help students to develop the leadership skills and qualities that will help them to succeed into model professionals.
Residence life on campus offers students the choice of several housing options during their college experience. These options include student residence halls, which accommodate students of like majors and interest groups, making the transition period into college life much easier on students. Members of the Residence Life Staff also live within the housing complexes to ensure student safety and complaisance. Many students take advantage of the study abroad program, enabling students with the opportunity to live amongst various cultures around the world.
Financial Aid
Hendrix College offers students plenty of financial aid opportunities to help alleviate the stress during their studies. During such a vital time in a student’s life, as they begin on their independent journey towards their professional goals, Hendrix College understands that there are certain aspects of college that are more stressful than others. Finding the proper funding can eliminate unnecessary stress on students. For this reason, the Office of Financial Aid is available throughout the entire year to assist students in exploring all funding options.
Members of the Financial Aid Office are also available to help students complete the application process to ensure timely scheduling. All students are encouraged to apply for multiple funding opportunities such as grants, scholarships and private funding. Hendrix College offers student’s consideration for private funding based on merit, artistic and athletic achievements during high school.
