Goucher College is recognized for being the first college to combine their required study abroad program with a stipend, helping students to handle the expenses when residing off campus. This is just the beginning of how Goucher showcases their strong emphasis on relieving some of the stress for students during their college years. Many students that attend Goucher take advantage of the double major program. Students no longer have to choose between one major and a minor, instead, they can take advantage of the same scheduling with a more prestigious outcome. Goucher focuses on both graduate and professional studies to help students develop the skills they need to survive in a competitive job market. This school also offers an extensive undergraduate program of courses for adults as well.

Goucher College is dedicated to provide a well rounded curriculum for students that offer a wide range of benefits such as academic guidance, community involvement and international studies. Although the college offers a wide variety of courses on campus, students can also push their experience one step further by traveling to different countries or taking advantage of the distance learning programs available as well.

School History

With over 125 years of experience, Goucher College was originally founded in 1885 by Reverend John Franklin Goucher. Remaining dedicated to the liberal arts and a strong education for students, Goucher had originally opened as the Woman’s College of Baltimore – and then renamed after its founder in 1910. Although the college campus moved in 1953 from its original location in downtown Baltimore, to a more secluded area in order to help students focus on their education without distraction from the congested city scene – the dedication to keeping the students involved in community activities has not subsided.

Goucher College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

With an exciting history behind the school, Goucher has developed a long line of dedicated faculty and staff to assist students in the proper development and education during their college experience. This school has come a long way since its first 5 graduates in 1892. By 1905, the school inducted its first members into the Beta Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and by 1942, Goucher opened the first residence hall for students now known as the Mary Fisher Hall. In 1978, Goucher decided to make their study abroad program a graduation requirement to ensure that all students optimized their experience and education. Today it remains one of the only schools to require an international study program. By 1990, Goucher College enrolled the first graduate students into the program and since has added over 30 new courses and majors.

Campus Life

Life on the Goucher College campus is filled with activities, events and entertainment that are all incorporated into the strong curriculum offered to students. From athletic events to spiritual groups, students have their choice in entertainment and intellectual activities to participate in. The on campus Dining Hall offers a wide variety of daily menus to accommodate any students taste. The school also offers community living services that help students adjust to and optimize their life on campus. Goucher strongly believes that students should have a balanced schedule between studies and leisure to help them excel in their classes. This includes providing multicultural, religious and spiritual events for students to get involved in.

Goucher College offers students a safe and comfortable environment where they can live and study harmoniously. Since most students that attend Goucher live on campus, there is plenty of residence housing available to ensure that students are matched with peers of like interests or majors. This has proven to help students, especially first year students, to get familiar with their surroundings and have an easier transition to college life. Goucher encourage students to be independent, which is why students can find a variety of different Student Service Offices throughout the campus to assist them in health, wellness, scheduling and financial aid matters whenever needed.

To ensure that students have everything that they need, Goucher implements a strong student involvement policy. This allows students to get involved with helping other students adjust and maintain daily life while at school. Campus resources include amenities such as medical housing, special interest housing, micro fridge rentals and even on campus storage facilities. For students who opt to attend summer classes, Goucher also provides summer housing facilities as well.

Financial Aid

Goucher College has a long line of dedication to helping students obtain financial aid. Aside from accepting traditional forms of aid such as government funded loans, including the TAP and FAFSA loans, as well as a wide variety of other options. Goucher offers students a well designed Financial Aid tracking system that is available online to enable them the convenience of keeping their applications organized and electronic. Since many first year students and their families can sometimes be overwhelmed by the financial aid process, The Office of Financial Aid remains available to help students research, find and apply for various aid programs.

Goucher provides a unique assistance program to students with services such as the Federal Loan Entrance and Exit Counseling programs. This ensures that all students have considered or been considered for any form of financial aid they may qualify for. In turn, this increases a student’s chance to obtain aid and alleviate the stress from their studies. Aside from traditional forms of aid, Goucher also offers Veteran benefits, merit and need based funding as well as athletic scholarships.

Overview

Despite college rankings and countless beautiful college websites, most students and families know very little about the actual student experience at particular schools. College websites, campus tours and conversations with high school guidance counselors provide very limited information.

The Voice of the Student Survey compares the responses of over 7,500 liberal arts college undergraduates on more than 40 questions about college life. As a result, we learned what “real life” looks like at individual schools.

Some of the best (and worst) performers in our research are surprising. Some are among the U.S. News & World Report’s top ranked liberal arts colleges in the country, while others are ranked much lower but provide a successful student experience.

Our Liberal Arts Insider members know exactly how these colleges compare.

We surveyed thousands of liberal arts students to help you get the real scoop about the student experience… the good, the bad and the ugly.

Campus Community Coach & Safety Sherpa

How safe, accepted, and comfortable students feel on their college campus is one of the largest influencing factors as to how satisfied they feel with their college experience. Having a tight-knit college community is the cornerstone of a successful college experience, as proven by our Voice of the Students survey.

We can compare what the college brochures advertise to what students are actually experiencing; sometimes the admissions representatives have no idea how students on their campus really feel. This “Community” section is a way to find out exactly what students think about their campus, in their own words. Here, we have data about student satisfaction, housing, social cliques, and student’s sense of safety.

Academics Advisor

Without a doubt, academics are a major focus, if not the top priority, for many college students. Schools will often advertise their classrooms as collaborative, but we’ve found that students sometimes describe the academic environment as highly competitive. Are students helping each other with academic work or trying to get ahead? Do students spend every waking moment with their nose in a book?

We asked students both qualitative and quantitative questions to find out how the academics at this school challenge them, and contribute to their college experience. Find out directly from the students how they feel about academics, challenging or otherwise, at their school.

Social Life Navigator

In addition to academics, social life is integral to the campus experience, and it’s dictated by a few different elements. Do students feel discriminated against based on their identities? Where do students spend most of their time socializing? Do drugs and alcohol dominate the social scene? This is the kind of information that schools will NOT advertise.

So, to find truthful answers these to questions, we asked students for their perspectives. We looked into social aspects such as extracurricular involvement, opportunities in the local community, and alcohol/drug culture on this campus.
