Coe College encourages the development of a strong education through a close-knit community environment and support system. This school focuses on liberal studies but offers a wide variety of over 50 additional majors for students to explore. With under 1,500 students enrolled each year, Coe College offers an attention driven education style, offering a more personalized college experience. Outside of the classroom environment, Coe College provides a well rounded atmosphere and community services such as plenty of performing arts attractions, live performances and concerts. The school also hosts wide array of various festivals and community service group activities as well.

Coe College does not use SAT scores, but rather ACT scores among other requirements, to qualify students for admission. This creates a sense of comfort for some students that have not taken the SAT test. Focusing on preparing students to be well-groomed adults and professionals is of high importance to Coe College. As such, the school has built strong relationships and affiliations such as the Associated Colleges of the Midwest and local liberal arts community committees.

School History

Coe College was founded in 1851 and has since provided a residential education experience for students, focusing on liberal arts. The college has always offered various coeducational four year degree programs and over 50 majors of studies. Throughout the years, the college has added to and modified their curriculum to accommodate the ever changing world, truly preparing students for what lies ahead in their futures.

Coe College is one of the only colleges in Iowa to host their own chapter of Phi Beta Kappa honor society.

This school diligently focuses on providing students of all financial statuses, backgrounds and religions a solid and equal education. It proudly welcomes students from nearly 75% of the United States and over 20 foreign countries as well. As the founders had believed, establishing smaller class sizes and a more hands-on approach to education can leave longer lasting impressions on students. This type of personalized education is still provided today with class sizes remaining under 20 students.

Campus Life

Truly a home away from home, the residential setting of Coe College offers students an easier transition to college life. The school provides a variety of different amenities on campus such as the library, study hall, fitness center and women’s health facility. Students can conveniently maintain an entertaining social life with the interactive event calendar updated daily by the student body. This calendar consists of everything from volleyball games to concerts and performances at the theatre center. Coe College ensures that students are being intellectually stimulated with education and life altering experiences both inside and outside of the classroom.

Students that live on campus can choose between one of the residential halls or apartment complexes owned by the school. All housing facilities are furnished with beds, desks, dressers, lamps and night stands for students to utilize. Apartment complexes are also furnished with necessary appliances for convenience. Coe College students can also get involved with the variety of clubs, organizations and community service groups that are established, operated and maintained by the student body. This enables the students to get involved with each other in efforts to spread civility within the school body and outer communities.

Coe College dedicated themselves to building an overall nourishing and supportive learning experience for their students. This includes providing an array of opportunities, career training, health counseling and mindset support activities that engage the students intellectually and for entertainment purposes. Creating this balance for students has proven quite successful in developing strong values for personal and career growth.

Overview

Despite college rankings and countless beautiful college websites, most students and families know very little about the actual student experience at particular schools. College websites, campus tours and conversations with high school guidance counselors provide very limited information.

The Voice of the Student Survey compares the responses of over 7,500 liberal arts college undergraduates on more than 40 questions about college life. As a result, we learned what “real life” looks like at individual schools.

Some of the best (and worst) performers in our research are surprising. Some are among the U.S. News & World Report’s top ranked liberal arts colleges in the country, while others are ranked much lower but provide a successful student experience.

Our Liberal Arts Insider members know exactly how these colleges compare.

We surveyed thousands of liberal arts students to help you get the real scoop about the student experience… the good, the bad and the ugly.

Campus Community Coach & Safety Sherpa

How safe, accepted, and comfortable students feel on their college campus is one of the largest influencing factors as to how satisfied they feel with their college experience. Having a tight-knit college community is the cornerstone of a successful college experience, as proven by our Voice of the Students survey.

We can compare what the college brochures advertise to what students are actually experiencing; sometimes the admissions representatives have no idea how students on their campus really feel. This “Community” section is a way to find out exactly what students think about their campus, in their own words. Here, we have data about student satisfaction, housing, social cliques, and student’s sense of safety.

Academics Advisor

Without a doubt, academics are a major focus, if not the top priority, for many college students. Schools will often advertise their classrooms as collaborative, but we’ve found that students sometimes describe the academic environment as highly competitive. Are students helping each other with academic work or trying to get ahead? Do students spend every waking moment with their nose in a book?

We asked students both qualitative and quantitative questions to find out how the academics at this school challenge them, and contribute to their college experience. Find out directly from the students how they feel about academics, challenging or otherwise, at their school.

Social Life Navigator

In addition to academics, social life is integral to the campus experience, and it’s dictated by a few different elements. Do students feel discriminated against based on their identities? Where do students spend most of their time socializing? Do drugs and alcohol dominate the social scene? This is the kind of information that schools will NOT advertise.

So, to find truthful answers these to questions, we asked students for their perspectives. We looked into social aspects such as extracurricular involvement, opportunities in the local community, and alcohol/drug culture on this campus.
