Transylvania University
Kentucky has been the site of much educational reform over the past two decades, with the result that each year, more than 4,600 students graduate from liberal arts schools in Kentucky. Kentucky has many liberal arts schools to choose from, with an average cost of around ten thousand dollars per year in tuition fees for a degree in liberal arts in the state.
Alice Lloyd College is one of the few colleges in the USA which has a mandatory work-study program. Alice Lloyd is dedicated to helping local members of the mountain community get good education, though it has students enrolling from across the country and all over the world. Through the Appalachian Leaders College Scholarship program offered by the college, students from the mountains of Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia pay no tuition.
Berea College is one of the first coeducational and racially integrated schools in the south. Berea is known for providing four-year scholarships to its students. This is a highly selective college, granting admission to only those students who need financial aid. This school has a mandatory work-study program and has accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Centre College provides excellent value and good financial aid to its students. Centre College has membership in Phi Beta Kappa for strong liberal arts and sciences. The school has excellent graduation and retention rates, and is regularly present in the national lists of best colleges.
Georgetown College is a private Baptist college and has a rich history dating back to 1829. It has an active student life which includes many fraternities and sororities. The school has an 11 to 1 student to faculty ratio and a relatively high acceptance rate. It offers its students more than 35 majors. Georgetown College students are also very active in sports with participation in many intercollegiate sporting events.
Transylvania University, founded in 1780, is located in Lexington and is the oldest university west of the Allegheny Mountains. It is consistently featured in the top tier colleges of the country. Transylvania provides its students grant aid, and is known for its popular fraternity and sorority system. The school has a high acceptance rate and a small average class size.
Kentucky has many colleges belonging to different classifications, both public and private, also religious and secular colleges, with varying standards of Admission criteria, value system, student engagement and other parameters. The liberal arts colleges of Kentucky are noted for their curricular strengths, though differing in their vision for their students.
