Wheaton College is dedicated to providing students with a unique educational structure that caters to their academic, professional and social development. The Illinois campus is most widely known for their professional programs such as Business Management and Heath Services. However, many students attend Wheaton to pursue the Economics and English Language and Literature programs as well. Encouraging students with a heavy emphasis on the individual role in both church and society, students at Wheaton College are encouraged to be involved in all aspects of their communities, as well as their individual success. Faculty members and staff are actively involved in helping students achieve their individual goals effectively and most importantly, in a time efficient manner.
Wheaton College follows a Statement of Faith and Educational Purpose that was designed by Charles Blanchard in 1942. This creed empowers students to take part in the strong community established at the school that enables students to carry out their Christian duties within their academic community, church and social communities. Wheaton College has a deep rooted history both on campus and across the world. Since the beginning of the school’s existence, students have established missions throughout the world, helping communities to embrace the Church and their involvement within their parishes. Students are encouraged and taught to help others develop spiritually, academically and physically – assisting those who may or may not be able to pursue their achievements on their own.
School History
With over 150 years of academic experience, Wheaton College was founded to carry out the word of Christ, helping students to develop and achieve their faith through education and community involvement. The presidents of the school throughout the years have played a vital role in the traditions and legacies established over the years such as the global missions and community soup drives that are held each semester. Jonathan Blanchard, one of the early presidents also served as the president of Knox College was no stranger to the educational system. As such, he helped to develop the foundation of Wheaton College, establishing a challenging curriculum that engaged students. After losing a percentage of students to the Civil War, Blanchard and various faculty members, including his son, started to develop more organizations that spread the Christian values across the world.
Wheaton College is accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education as well as the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Charles Blanchard became president of the college in 1882. During his reign, many building additions were added to the campus grounds including iconic structures such as Williston Hall and Adams Hall. By the 1920’s, Wheaton College received accreditation and under the reign of James Oliver Buswell began offering a more structured liberal arts program. Buswell challenged the academic structure that the College was based on by adding faculty members with advanced degrees to the staff in order to provide students with a more advanced curriculum. It was also during this presidency that Wheaton began offering graduated courses as well.
The Wheaton College Alumni Association was formed in 1944 under the presidency of V. Raymond Edman and currently consists of over 39,000 members.
Throughout the changing times, Wheaton College has adapted to both environment and structure, offering students challenging programs that prepare them for professional and leadership careers, while remaining true to their Christian roots.
Campus Life
Wheaton College provides students with a strong support community that helps them to embrace their devotion to Christ, as well as explore their social, special interest and athletic abilities. With a strong focus on Christ-centered diversity, Wheaton students will find plenty of resources available to enhance their spiritual beliefs and interest. The Office of Multicultural Development is available to guide students with academic and extra-curricular decisions that can help enhance their college experience. Many students enjoy participating in the Discipleship Small Group that meets routinely and facilitates many campus events.
All Wheaton College students live on campus in the various housing facilities, which helps students to maintain strong bonds and friendships with their peers. There are several residence halls that provide students with furnished dorms based on special interests and academic major. Students also have the choice of apartments and houses that are located throughout the campus grounds, enabling students the ability to develop their independence while being close to classes and resources. Undergraduates can opt for off-campus housing when available. Wheaton College also accommodates students attending graduate programs with private housing on and off campus. Dining services and facilities are available to all students and accommodate early morning and late evening hours.
Wheaton College is dedicated to providing students with an enriching atmosphere both in and out of the classroom. For this reason, students are encouraged to take advantage of the organizations, clubs and athletic teams offered – helping them to build and develop leadership skills that will help them excel in their future. Wheaton students take pride in their faith and their involvement in their community, many showcasing their pride through the various outreach programs and community service missions organized by the student body.
Financial Aid
Wheaton College encourages students to seek financial aid as early as possible to ensure they are able to optimize their schedule each semester. Staff and faculty are available to assist students in exploring their funding options such as scholarships, loans and grants. There are many tools available to help students calculate the total costs of college including books and supplies, as well as personal expenses, to apply accurately – reducing the amount of out of pocket expenses.
Wheaton College accepts FAFSA loans, as well as offers private funding for qualifying students. Many students take advantage of scholarships offered by charity organizations and fundraising groups that offer funding options. Students can obtain applications to many resources from the Office of Financial Aid to assist them with funding options. All students are encouraged to explore all options including a combination of scholarships and grants to help them alleviate the financial hardship of their education, giving them the freedom and peace of mind to focus on their studies and goals.
