Morehouse College is an established and profound liberal arts college dedicated to providing black men with a solid education and confidence to compete in the professional world. The Morehouse heritage runs deep within the roots of many civic leaders, educators and activists that shared the same dedication to providing a safe and solid atmosphere for men to establish their identity, strengths and talents. Morehouse men become spiritually disciplined individuals – men that are able to implement critical thinking skills and innovative ideas to solve problems and excel both their personal and professional lives.

In order to optimize their college experience, many Morehouse students take advantage of the study abroad opportunities, traveling to foreign countries and studying the various cultures of a diverse world. These experiences and developed skills set Morehouse College graduates aside from their professional competition. With such a deep history and background, it is no wonder why black men around the world choose to attend Morehouse College over any other school.

School History

Morehouse College developed its roots from the oldest independent African American church in the country – Springfield Baptist Church. In 1867, the College, then named August institute, was established in the very basement of the church to prepare and educate black men to become educators or part of the ministry. Originally founded by a group of men who shared the same passion to survive in what was then, a very unequal world – Rev. William Jefferson White, Rev. Richard C. Coulter, Rev. Edmund Turney and Rev. Dr. Joseph T. Robert. These men believed that strong faith combined with an equally strong education was the vital combination needed for black men to rise above the circumstances. By 1879, the school had moved into the basement of the Friendship Baptist Church to accommodate its growing size. At this time, the school was renamed to Atlanta Baptist Seminary.

The Morehouse College campus itself is situated on historical ground, a gift from John D. Rockefeller – land that was once used by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. By 1897, the school became known as Atlanta Baptist College. In 1906, Dr. John Hope became the first black president of the school, bringing his experience as an educator and civil rights activist to the College’s existing deep rooted heritage. It was not until 1913, when the founder of the school had passed away that the school was renamed as it is known today, Morehouse College, in honor of the corresponding secretary of the Northern Baptist Home Mission Society – Henry L. Morehouse.

Morehouse College is accredited by the American Association of Schools and Colleges of Business as well as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Campus Life

Campus life at Morehouse College is always vibrant and thriving with plenty of events and activities to attend. Many students take part in the infamous jazz band of Morehouse College, whether playing an instrument or supporting in the crowd. The College strives to encourage students to take control of their college experience, actively participating in the daily life and specialty programs. This type of supportive atmosphere creates a strong bond between students and faculty alike, ensuring a well-optimized education. All activities on campus are designed to stimulate the intellect of students while providing entertainment. Whether it is attending a lecture or seminar, or even attending one of the many conferences that take place on campus, students are inspire to push their education to the limit at all times.

The Office of Student Services is available throughout the year to assist students in all of their academic, personal, cultural or spiritual needs. Advisors are dedicated to helping students maximize their college experience. Morehouse College is dedicated t helping students develop the leadership skills they need to be successful professionals such as student development services and putting together the New Student Orientation Event each year.

Students that live on campus can appreciate the strong foundation and comfortable setting on each residential hall. Apartments are available throughout the campus as well as special interest and athletic housing. Morehouse College strives to enhance the college experience whenever possible for students, which is why students are able to find a wealth of information regarding available housing, fee schedules and updated policies on the Office of Residential Life website. The interactive blog showcases a wealth of videos, photos and information for each residence hall enabling students to remain involved in residential life.

Financial Aid

Assisting students with their financial aid needs is of the utmost important at Morehouse College. Financial advisors actively work throughout the year to help students explore all possibilities including government based loans such as TAP and FAFSA loans, scholarships and grants. Many students may qualify for need based grants and awards upon admission that could potentially cover between $1,500 and full tuition each semester. Paying for college can be extremely difficult for most students. In fact, over 95% of Morehouse College students receive some form of financial aid each year.

Many students take advantage of the variety of different work study and study abroad programs at Morehouse College to help alleviate some of the bills. Employment opportunities are located on and off campus and may sometimes relate to course study. Morehouse College students can agree that financial aid counselors will go above and beyond to help students prepare themselves for the road to success ahead of them without the stress of paying for school.
