Chapman University is a student-centered, non-profit university that takes pride in its rich history and diverse student body. This diversity was evident from the very beginning, as the school admitted men, women and students of various ethnicities when it first opened its doors in 1861.

School History

Although the California institution was first named Hesperian College by its Christian founders, the university’s name changed to Chapman College in 1934, when the school was endowed by Valencia orange magnate Charles Clarke. Twenty years later, the school moved to Orange, California, to the site of the former Orange Union High School. The school then began offering courses to military members at the El Toro Marine Base, and later implemented the World Campus Afloat program, in which students were granted the opportunity to study abroad.

Chapman is now the home school of students from across the U.S. and from over 60 countries. The school upholds its mission “to provide personalized education of distinction that leads to inquiring, ethical, and productive lives as global citizens.”

Campus Life

From the moment students arrive on campus, they are encouraged to take part in campus activities. Chapman emphasizes overall well-being, offering programs and activities to meet students’ intellectual, social, spiritual and physical needs. First-year students can choose to stay on campus or utilize campus resources to find off-campus housing.

The school prioritizes inclusivity, and maintains meaningful outreach opportunities to bring students and local community members together. On-campus events and activities take place daily, including concerts, team sports, Greek events and religious ceremonies. Students of all faiths are encouraged to worship at the Fish Interfaith Center.

Those students who enjoy physical activity can test their skills on the campus’ rock wall, or join Chapman’s 500 student athletes in intramural sports or at the competitive level. Students compete in no less than 21 sports at the NCAA Division III level. From ice hockey to lacrosse, and cheerleading to the equestrian club, students can explore their athletic interests and build confidence as part of a team.

Academics

Chapman University believes in learning beyond the classroom. Whether they are interested in the arts, business, science or entrepreneurship, the college encourages students to study abroad, research and collaborate with fellow students and faculty, and explore their passions. The school takes great pride in its world-class faculty, who are dedicated to helping students carve out their own paths to flourishing lives and careers. Students define what motivates them before choosing a major. Whether it’s through creative expression, finding solutions to problems, helping others, experiencing new places or making business decisions, students are given the tools necessary to reach their goals and follow their dreams.

Chapman’s student-teacher ratio is impressive at 14:1. Many classes have fewer than 20 students, so faculty members are able to give each student the attention they deserve.

Financial Aid

Although the “sticker price” of Chapman University is high,financial aid is offered through donor scholarships and grants, institutional awards, federal direct loans, private loans, and Chapman interest-free loans. Federal work study programs are also available, giving students the opportunity to work part-time during their enrollment.

First year Chapman University students can expect to feel welcome and included from their very first day on campus. From activities and events at the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts to the Masson Family Beach Club Pool, students in need of a break from their studies can choose from leisure activities that meet their individual preferences.

For those looking to discover the beauty of Orange County, there is plenty of historic architecture nearby, and Disney Land is just a Metro ride away. Students may be studying for an exam one day and exploring Southern California the next. Many students choose to stay in the beautiful Orange County area after graduation.
