School History
Originally founded as Decatur Female Seminary in 1889, Agnes Scott College has helped mold the lives of women as both civilians and professionals since it was established. Since opening, the school has changed several names, operating in honor of its founders and iconic figures. In 1890, the school was renamed in honor of the founder, Col. George Washington Scott, who dedicated the school in honor of his mother. Operating under the name Agnes Scott Institute, the school offered liberal arts classes to local women until 1906, when the name was changed for the final time. Chartered to offer four-year degrees, Agnes Scott College began incorporating more professional programs into the curriculum.
Agnes Scott College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Agnes Scott College was the first college in the state of Georgia to earn regional accreditation and has since dedicated their resources to continuously enriching the lives of women – assisting students in becoming model individuals, citizens and professionals. During the early days of the school, students developed a strict honor code that is still in existence today. In 1926, Agnes Scott was granted a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, a tradition ad honor that has been upheld since. Staff and faculty members throughout the years have dedicated themselves to assisting students in achieving their goals by presenting various opportunities, consistent support and guidance when needed. Providing a challenging and stimulating curriculum has successfully helped Agnes Scott College achieve a strong and consistent reputation in the top 10 percent of national schools with students completing their Ph.D. programs.
Campus Life
In order to help women develop strong communication, academic and social skills, Agnes Scott College has worked hard to establish a tightly bonded community of students that enable each other to achieve their individual goals. On campus, students have a selection of over 45 various clubs and organizations to choose from, each helping them showcase a different interest, belief or community service mission. Campus life offers a spacious and supportive environment that embraces respect and acceptance for others, as well as a strong dedication for servicing the outside communities. Agnes Scott students work hard to inspire each other to share their education, talents and civility with others through local and global community efforts – passing on the traditions of the founders.
Religious and spiritual life is an important aspect on campus, many students participating in the various religious groups that meet routinely on campus. Agnes Scott College is proud to welcome all students of various race, religion and creed, to study and experience a reliable and in-depth educational experience. All students have access to the health, wellness and safety services located on campus, as well as the technology lab, where many students go to catch up on research and studies.
Housing facilities on campus are delegated by special interests and academic majors. All first year students reside in the same residence halls to ensure an easier transition amongst their peers. Many students take advantage of the various outdoor activities offered on and off-campus such as the Decatur and Atlanta excursions, which highlight that many historical sites around the community. Life at Agnes Scott College consists of a large scale of events, activities, seminars, workshops and of course, lives performances for students to enjoy.
Financial Aid
Agnes Scott College offers all students assistance in the financial aid aspect of their college experience. Understanding how brutal it can be to pay for school is what of the many facets that enables the college to offer a unique experience during attendance. Many students qualify for government based funding such as FAFSA loans, while others apply for private funding instead. Financial Aid counselors are available to assist students in the application process to ensure timely registration for classes. All students are encouraged to apply for multiple forms of financial aid in attempts to fully optimize their program schedules.
To ensure that students receive a high quality education, Agnes Scott College has consistently carried out “The Agnes Solution” each year to ensure that all qualifying students receive funding to assist them throughout the school year, such grants do not require repayment, making life after graduation a well deserved transition. The College gladly accepts all forms of PLUS loans, scholarships and grant funding from various sources. In addition to traditional funding options, students are also invited to participate in the work study program available on campus to help reduce the costs of tuition each semester.
