Southern California Style. Diverse Student Population.
This stand out liberal arts school is located between Los Angeles and Orange County, California. The school is known for its diverse student population and many activity options, both on and off campus. Whittier College is distinguished by its small size, pioneering faculty, and nationally recognized curriculum.
The college sits on 70+ acres adjacent to the historic town of Whittier, a small town that is a strong supporter of “Poet” sports teams. Educational facilities rival those at large public institutions but do so in an intimate setting where professors focus on developing students’ intellectual curiosity.
The Self Designed Learning Path
Whittier College has long been a place of academic innovation, where a community of learners pushes past constraints traditional learning. In additional to the traditional undergraduate liberal arts track, students can select (and about 1 in 6 do) to design their own educational program help them achieve their goals.
The “Scholars Program” is not an honors program. It is an opportunity for highly motivated and independent students to get involved in the design of their own academic program. These students understand that deep learning goes beyond the classroom. This self-designed approach is capped off during the students’ senior year, when they must present and defend their Senior Project to faculty.
Dedicated Faculty
90 full time faculty members and all have either a PhD or the highest degree available in their field. Combined with a student to faculty ratio of 13:1, students can get plenty of personal attention in terms of academic advising.
Many professors live on campus as do all students through their Junior year (with many Seniors also choosing to stay on campus). This contributes to the close knit feeling and learning environment outside of the classroom.
Location. Location. Location.
The advantage of being near Los Angeles is that there always something to do… surf in the morning, ski in the afternoon, visit the Getty, see the Hollywood stars or go take a ride with Mickey Mouse. It is all just a short drive away.
But with more than 70 clubs and organizations on campus, you don’t need to hop in a car to seek fun. There are nine “societies” (don’t call them Fraternaties or Sororities), strong sports teams (don’t miss the “Battle of the Shoes” football game with rival Occidental College), crazy competitions between dorms (it’s hard to get more serious about fun than this) and strong intramural sports programs.
