College of the Atlantic is the first college of its kind in the country. Founded in 1969 in Bar Harbor, Maine, COA has always had its primary focus on positive relationships between human beings and the environment. With a primary goal of improving sustainability practices around the world, students will have unique experiences through hands-on research to make positive impacts on the environment.

Applicant Selectivity: Moderately Selective

The selectivity of applicants for undergraduate admissions to is considered moderately selective. Many accepted applicants score in the mid-range on the SAT or ACT exam, as well as having a solid high school GPA and number of college prep courses.

Admissions Requirements

General Recommendations & Requirements for Admissions

In addition to the online application and application fee, prospective students are also required to submit the following information and documents:

  • (1) At least two letters of recommendation from high school teachers.
  • (2) Official high school transcripts.
  • (3) Official school report and recommendation from a high school guidance counselor.

Although not required for admission consideration, College of the Atlantic admission staff does strongly recommend that candidates have a formal admission interview.

Because proof of academic performance is not always the sole indicator of a good fit for a COA program, prospective students are welcome to also submit portfolios.
